Subject: central contract

The arbitrator has released our central contract, and ONA is very disappointed. We have been awarded 1% pay raise, due to Bill 124. ONA is going to superior court to argue that this legislation, as it is not allowing us to freely  negotiate. I will be filing grievance that this settlement a  violation of human rights. We will keep you up to date. Unfortunately I am having computer issues and will be sending out the highlight of this award tomorrow

Please go to ONA website www.ona.org/bargaining – the full arbitration decision including items in agreement, highlights document and draft Collective Agreement are posted.

Telephone town halls will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at 1730 hrs and 1930 hrs to inform you  of the full arbitration decision and highlights. Visit www.ona.org/bargaining for additional details related to regions and timing.

Subject: Safety message from CMH’s Union Leadership

Dear colleagues – We are reaching out to you with a simple message:

Let’s stay safe!

You know the highly infectious Delta variant has rooted itself in our community. It continues to wreak havoc on those who are partially immunized and those who choose not to get vaccinated. For these reasons, we urge that you continue to wear the PPE that is made available to you. Wear your face shield. Clean your hands. Continue to do those things that will give you and your team the best chance at not getting sick and spreading infection.

Why? Because it works.

We know the burden of providing care, support and service under these conditions. It’s uncomfortable; we recognize that. But because of your vigilance, the hospital has maintained a safe environment thus far:  we had the fewest outbreaks in the region and we had the fewest staff off sick because of COVID-19. We are so proud of your commitment to safety.

The pandemic will recede but now is the time to maintain our caution to ensure we get through this together, as one team.

Regards,

Louise Burbidge

Subject: professional practice – unsafe forms

In response to RN requesting education on completing the professional practice forms(unsafe forms),  and since we can not have a group education due to the restrictions, I will be sending out emails when I am in the union office, for 15 min drop in sessions , to review the forms.

I will send emails the day prior , with the time frames for dropping in

As soon as we can meet as a group, we can meet with individual units, and help compete the forms with unit specific issues

Subject: redeployed staff

Good morning

There has been a successful award recently regarding redeployment and changing RN from 8 hr to 12 hr shifts.

In the award , the facility was successful in having any staff who were changed from 8 hr to 12 hrs due to redeployment, have the last 4hrs paid at premium

I have file an union grievance regarding this. WE will keep you up to date as this proceeds

Subject: important re 2d2n grievance

Hi members:

I write to you today about the issue of premiums payable for RNs who have a shift added to their schedules when they are working a “4 on, 5 off” (also called a “2 Day, 2 Night”) schedule.  I sent an email out on June 1, 2020 encouraging members to make me aware of such shifts added to anyone’s 4 on, 5 off schedule.

ONA and the Employer went before an arbitrator last week to argue about the claim for premiums when a shift is added to a 4 on, 5 off schedule.  We expect to get the decision in the next one to two months; there is no guarantee of when the Arbitrator will finish writing the decision, but I will send another email after we get this decision.

In the process of arguing this issues in this grievance before the Arbitrator, ONA had to concede that there had been a practice that had gone on under the existing collective agreement of not paying premium for working two many days in a row that we did not challenge for a number of years.  In light of this, if we are successful in our argument, it is unlikely that any payment for any ONA member under the current collective agreement relating to working an additional shift adjacent to a regular day pattern of work will be found to be payable while the Local Appendix to the collective agreement remains in effect.

This does not mean that the issue is dead – but it does mean that we will not be able to get a missing premium portion from any shift referred to in grievances we have filed to date, or in any other situations that may occur until the current Local Appendix to our collective agreement; in other words, the remedy may be awarded in the decision we are expecting, but it will likely be only for future patterns of five or more extended shifts on consecutive days.  So, despite my request last year to keep me informed about instances of you having a shift added on immediately before a “regular” pattern of two days and two nights of work, I no longer need to be made aware of such situations.

We can start pursuing this issue again (depending on how the Arbitrator’s decision will be written, of course) once the current Local Appendix to our collective agreement expires and is replaced by a new collective agreement.  (Just to confirm this – the central portion of the Hospital collective agreement is likely to be finalized before we get the Local Appendix finalized – someone from ONA will communicate with you about these agreements as they proceed.)  I will let you know about when there will be a replacement Local Appendix when that occurs in the future.

I hope this clarifies what is going on with the “4 on, 5 off premium issue” at present.  The next thing you should expect to hear from me on this issue is a communication about what the Arbitrator’s decision is in the grievance that has already been argued, and for which we are waiting for that decision to be written.

Good afternoon,

Just to let you know I being redeployed to ICU next week,  you may notice a delay in me responding to your emails, as I now back to 12 hrs shifts. I will try to respond within 48 Hrs, as well as HR has agreed to allow for extension of grievance timelines.

This is a difficult time, everyone is working overtime, tired of being short, and are exhausted and all the stressors that go with being redeployed. Complete your professional practice forms, and keep me up to date on changes in your area.

United we stand, divided we fall

Stay safe

Subject: FW: This Week @ ONA: new mental health support program launches; read ONA govt submission; Nursing Week; phone zap and more

Good morning,

Please see the announcement from our provincial president, regarding Mental health support for nursing, to help with the ongoing stress, please see below

Hello,

With COVID-19’s third wave firmly here in Ontario, we continue to be burdened with stressful situations that impact our mental health.

I’m pleased to announce that – together with the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) – we have launched a new mental health program for nurses and health-care professionals called Mindwell for Health-care Workers. It is a four-week program that was designed through consultations with CFNU mental health experts and nurse leaders from across the country. We are all very excited about the program, which will offer you, our members, training and tools to better manage stress and difficult situations.

This program is tailored to health-care workers. Please visit the website to find out more and to register. The program starts on April 12 and space is limited, so if you are under stress and you may need help, please register as soon as possible. Please also share this information with your members.

In solidarity,

Vicki McKenna, RN

We will be discussing this at our hospital association meeting this month, to see what CMH plans are going forward to deal with this issue

As well please complete a form if you are working in the MH area of ER and there is no one but a PSW to cover you for your breaks, as you are doing a TOA of a non regulated worker
